PART 2.

 Kent School of Architecture

AGRICULTURAL THEATRE: THE MENEPARISHE
UNIT 1; STAGE 5

The Meneparishe: Agricultural Theatre speculates on the diversification of farming practice. Early studies included the Yantlet Creek Cattle Observatory and deployment of a Camera Obscura. The project investigated the last Kentish cattle mart and proposed an alternative experiential typology in light of the discontinuation of EU farming subsidies in Britain. The complex is a theatre, the cattle actors, the farmers their supporting cast, and the curious visitors, the audience.

AGRICULTURAL THEATRE: GUILD OF SEASONAL WORKERS
UNIT 1; STAGE 4

The project uses an architecture of assembly to infer a social/political commentary on the nature of work and play. A consequence of mechanised agriculture is a decreasing population of seasonal occupation in Kent. Industrial landscapes (such as the German Lausitz mining region) are being remade for leisure use; I challenge that the European Route of Industrial Heritage does not yet classify Farming as an industry of interest. The project aims to establish a guild of seasonal workers, celebrating the spectacle of rural absurdity.

EXPERIENTIAL WORKSHOP
RADICAL PEDAGOGY

Experiential learning workshops are one way to enrich the education of Stage 1 Kent School of Architecture students; endorsing a haptic design process and collaborative relationships with makers. Workshops aimED to equip students with an epistemological and self evaluating design skill, one which promotes physical activity in a largely inactive occupation. Furthermore, through the shared experience of collaboration away from typical environments of higher education, the project aims for students to become engaged with the local community and professionals in the field. Based upon observations which establish the nature of making in the Stage 1 Autumn term, a subsequent series of thematic and iterative ‘Experiential Workshops’ were proposed for the Spring. The most important consequence of the agenda was to begin a network of collaboration with local industries, strengthening the identity of the university’s graduates.
